Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPS)

All training takes place at your premises.

Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPS) are a piece of machinery used to provide temporary access to high, hard to reach and otherwise inaccessible areas. MEWPs are used predominately for completing work at height in the construction industry. However, they are also used within manufacturing, electronics in warehouses, arboriculture, film and television and mechanics for heavy goods vehicles. The platform is used to move people or equipment to working positions at height where they can carry out work from the platform. The intention of the device is for people to enter and exit the work platform only at access positions at ground level or on the chassis.

1b Category

The 1b category machines are static booms – these vehicles tend to use hydraulic legs once in position to stabilise as them as the boom is elevated. This means that even though they are on a mobile vehicle like a van or trailer, they are categorised as static.

3a Category

The 3a category machines are Self propelled machines capable of vertical lift only, usually called scissor lifts. Larger machines may have a maximum height restriction for driving – above this limit jacks need to be deployed which will prevent them from being driven along the ground.

3a machines can have scissor, sigma or vertical mast lift mechanisms.

3b Category

The 3b category machines are Mobile Boom machines (also known as cherry pickers), which are self-propelled booms and may be articulated. These are similar to the 1b in terms of how they can be manoeuvred vertically but you also have the ability to move the base unit while been elevated.

Each course culminates with three stages of testing:

  • A theory test –
  • Pre-use inspection test
  • Practical skills test involving various manoeuvres completed in a safe manner
Experienced/Safety Refresher Candidates 1-4 1
Novice Candidates 1-4 1-2 days –  Dependant on machine type

Course review and close

By the end of the course, the delegate will:

Be fully aware of the relevant Health & Safety regulations and accident prevention and control

Be fully aware of the needs regarding personal protection equipment

Be able to manoeuvre the machine as required and drive the machine proficiently and safely

Be able to correctly position and carry out the required tasks in a correct and proper manner

Facilities required

Firstly, and most importantly we need the use of your MEWP. Also, an area where we will not be disturbed, with ample space to carry out basic manoeuvres and testing.

For the theory lessons, we need sufficient space for the instructor and the trainees to work. A small office with a table, chairs and power will suffice.

All MEWP operators must ware their own or company provided PPE (such as):

Full body harness and restraint lanyard, hard hat if doing 1b or 3b course with documentation to show that inspection is in date

hi-visibility vests, safety boots and any other personal protective equipment as per the company’s internal risk assessments
